Terraria is a sandbox game, and sometimes it's hard to find direction to the game when there's so many aspects! This guide is made by Drew, who has completed terraria mobile as of 8/2/2018. Hopefully, it will help you progress in Terraria faster and have more fun! This guide can also be helpful for computer/console players, as the only difference that the computer has a few more events, bosses, and items.
1: Get wood, stone, gel, and possibly a few ores and build a house and hammer. In your house, each room must have a back wall, a crafting table, a chair, and a torch to be valid for NPCs to move in. Make sure to have a furnace and a chest asap. Smelt iron/lead bars in the furnace out of their respective ores. Also get torches.
2: With some newly acquired torches and blocks, head over to the desert. Keep your eye out for a jungle or ice biome. Jungle and Ice biomes are always on opposite sides of the world. Once you're in the desert, get all the cactus you can except for a few stalks. If there's an ice biome nearby, grab some ice torches. Make sure to start heading back at evening, so you're home at nightfall.
3: Craft a cactus sword and some cactus armor to defend yourself from zombies. A very conservative, but servicable, strategy is sticking your head outside and getting a few swings off with the sword, then darting back in. When day breaks, go to the ice biome (if you haven't done so already) and get ice torches. Then use some wood to craft a bow, and wood, stone, and those ice torches you collected to make frostburn arrows. Frostburn arrows will be a formidable weapon for a while as long as you can keep upgrading your bows!
4: Once you build up a servicable collection of frostburn arrows, you can start exploring the underground more. Get some gold/platinum and create a gold/platinum broadsword (pro tip: never make short swords). If you find any crystal hearts, consume them immediately. Optionally, you can use 8 gems (rated in most common to rarest: amethyst, topaz, sapphire, emerald, ruby, diamond) and 10 bars of ore (copper/tin, iron/lead, silver/tungsten, gold/platinum) to make a staff. Try to aim for a staff that doesn't require a ton of searching/luck to find (diamond), but also not a staff that sucks (I'm sorry, amethyst and topaz). By this time, you probably have gone outside at night and picked up some falling stars. 5 of these makes one mana star, which can be consumed to give you extra mana capacity. If you have enough gems (this is what you can use amethyst for) you can make a hook out of 15. A hook will be extremely helpful in traversing your world.
4a: The Eye of Cthulu may have come by now. You know when any boss is coming because the chat will say: the [boss] has awoken!" To defeat it, first give it a taste of your frostburn arrows. Shred the servants of Cthulu with your broadsword. The frostburn will slowly take down the Eye of Cthulu's health; just keep moving to make sure the EoC (Eye of Cthulu) doesn't take you down in the meantime! Spam frostburn arrows until the EoC is down to half health. The EoC will spin around and grow jaws. If you have a lesser healing potion, take it now. Go in with your broadsword, swing like a madman non-stop. It's basically a race of damage at this point, although you should keep moving around a bit. Occasionally, hit the EoC with an arrow to keep the frostburn on it. This is the strategy for defeating the EoC; just
use it whenever the EoC comes. When you kill the EoC, smelt the demonite/crimtane ore into bars, then make the blood butcherer/light's bane. Save the rest of the demonite/crimtane ore.
5: You should now go smashing pots to find a grenade (if you haven't done so already). A grenade in your inventory and an empty, valid, room will attract the demolitionist. Buy some of his bombs and combine them with gel to make sticky bombs. Now that you have a good sword and some experience, you should go to your nearest evil biome (crimson/corruption). Go down the tunnels/shafts using your hook for support. Beware that there are many monsters in the evil biomes! At the bottom of the evil biome, you will see dark orbs (corruption) or pulsing hearts (crimson). These will be covered with a layer of ebonstone or crimstone that your pickaxe can't break. This is where the sticky bombs come in. Throw them, one at a time, until the orb/heart is uncovered. Then, go in and break the orb/heart with any hammer. You should get a chilling message, such as "a horrible chill goes down your spine", but don't be worried. From breaking the first orb/heart, you will get a musket/undertaker pistol and some musket balls. Hold on to these. Repeat the process again; you might get a random cool weapon, such as the vilethorn, the ball o' hurt, the rotted fork, etc. On the third orb/heart, get ready, because each third destroyed orb/heart will summon a boss. For corruption, it will summon the eater of worlds(EoW), and for crimson it will summon the brain of Cthulu (BoC).
5a: Corruption players, you're in luck because the EoW is considered pretty much the lamest boss in the game. Just sit where you are after the spawning is announced and swing your sword. The EoW is a giant worm and will come to you to do like 30 damage, while you shred through it's segments with more or less any melee weapon.
5b: Crimson players will have a slightly harder time, but the Brain of Cthulu (BoC) is definitely a defeatable boss. Before it is vulnerable to any attack, you must kill it's creepers first. These are circular things that float around and do small damage to you. Take them out with some sword swings, than take a healing potion and go for the brain. You can go up to it and clobber it with your sword, or stay back and fire at it with arrows or your staff. The BoC will teleport occasionally, so don't worry if it does. You just need to do a little adjusting. However, if you come prepared you should be able to defeat it.
